Pop Up Village: Community in Motion

Pop up villages are fast becoming a vital space for experiencing new ways of living. Combining the ethos of eco communities with the playfulness of festivals, these villages invite us to imagine a different kind of society where living on the land and collaborating are essential.
What Is a Pop Up Village?
At its core, a pop up village is a short-term, immersive experience that brings together a diverse group of people to co-create a living environment based on shared values. These can last from a few days to several weeks, and typically take place in rural or semi-wild areas. Participants live together, share food, collaborate on projects, engage in learning and artmaking, and create their own temporary culture.
Unlike festivals, pop up villages are not oriented around spectacle. They are not about consumption, but about contribution. Everyone who comes is a builder, a dreamer, a weaver of space. Pop Up Villages welcome participants of all ages.
What Makes a Pop Up Village Different?
- Temporal intentionality: The village exists for a set period, and everything is designed with impermanence in mind. This heightens presence, care, and co-creation.
- Cocreation over curation: There are no spectators. Everyone contributes their time, energy, skills, and gifts.
- Governance: Decisions are made collectively using tools like sociocracy and consent-based systems.
- Regenerative values: Permaculture gardens, food forests, waste management, water management systems, compost toilets, zero waste policies, and local sourcing are integrated from the ground up.
- Embodied connection: Daily practices might include morning yoga, community check-ins, skillshares, and shared meals.
TDF's Pop Up Village in September
This autumn, we invite you to experience our first full-scale pop up village at our community, Traditional Dream Factory, in Portugal. Known for our regenerative approach to community living, at TDF we are expanding our vision to explore what happens when a temporary village is infused with the same depth of care and creativity as the long-term project.
This village will become a living system. Powered by off-grid infrastructure, fed by a regenerative kitchen, inspired by daily rituals and co-created workshops, and shaped by the hands of all who participate. During this month long journey, we will slow down, listen to each other and the land, and have fun. It will be temporary, but we have no doubts its impact will be lasting.

How does the Pop Up Village work?
What to Expect: Weekly Journey
- Week 1: Getting Grounded (Sept 1–7)
We’ll start by setting the foundations: getting to know each other, the land, and the values we’ll be living by. Workshops on community integration, non-violent communication, and somatic connection will help us settle in and build trust.
- Week 2: Exploring Possibilities (Sept 8–14)
This week is all about sharing skills, brainstorming ideas, and starting new collaborations. Whether you're into regenerative systems, art, entrepreneurship, or Web3, this is your chance to connect and co-create.
- Week 3: The Citizens’ Week (Sept 15–22)
We dive into community governance and explore how decisions can be made together. Expect nature hikes, strategy circles, creative play, and the celebration of the autumn equinox.
- Week 4: Building & Integration (Sept 23–30)
We close the month with action: prototyping, sprinting on projects, planning for what comes next and celebrating how far we’ve come. There’ll be plenty of space for movement, reflection, yoga, and rest.

Who Is the Pop Up Village Experience It For?
If you’ve been longing for community but unsure where to start... If you want to take a break from the city, enjoy the countryside and be part of something meaningful... If you are a digital nomad, artist, builder, cook, storyteller, healer, or simply a human willing to break from routine and enjoy nature... Then our pop up village is a great experience for you.
We aim to attract people from all walks of life, from Lisbon creatives to permaculture designers, from parents to wanderers. It’s a convergence of those willing to experience life to it fullest.
Beyond the Event: Seeding the Future
While our pop up village is temporary, its spirit will last. People often return home with new visions, skills, collaborators, and deep connections. Some go on to start their own projects. Others return year after year to plant new seeds.
At TDF, we believe these gatherings are more than events, they are prototypes of a regenerative future. Places where we remember what it means to be human together, where we unlearn isolation and rehearse belonging.
As we collectively face ecological and social tipping points, being part of a pop up village offers hope through action and provides resources for the future. It shows that community is something you find as well as something you build. Even if only for a little while.
